When I realized it was too late to drag Joey out of bed for an all-night kindergarten-readiness cramming session, I did the rational thing and moped around the living room, crying about how my son was going to be behind on the first day of school. And my sweet husband (who happens to have a fancy education degree that proves he knows something about schooling) reminded me that while it’d be nice if our kids were perfectly prepared for kindergarten on the first day, the truth is, that it’s an impossible task.

No kid in the history of the world has started school knowing everything he needed to know to start school. And even if a kid did happen to grow up in a house with a mama who had the tenacity to stick to the kindergarten-readiness checklist until every item was checked off, he would still probably forget everything he knew the second he walked into the door of the school. It’s Murphy’s (or should I say, MacPherson’s) law of kindergarten readiness.

My point? (Yes, I have a point!) You should do whatever you can to help your kid get ready for school. You should teach him about letters and numbers and shapes and how to button and zip his pants so he doesn’t walk around with his fly open all day. But this isn’t something to obsess about. Because that checklist isn’t as important as what’s going on in your kid’s heart. But I’ve already said that a billion times, haven’t I? And I hope it’s starting to sink in.

Because if the only thing you do to get your kid ready for school is work on The Fifteen Factors, then you’re doing well. No, better than well. You’re doing great. And I can assure you that if your kid enters school knowing who he is before God and what really matters in life, he will be successful.

But practically speaking, there are things you can do to help your kid get prepared for school—both academically and socially. And for the next couple of chapters, I’m going to help you work through those things. It’s a kindergarten-readiness checklist of sorts—a random assortments of my thoughts, tips, and learnings that I hope will help you as you as you help your kid get ready for school.
